The outdoor space of your Hamilton or Burlington home is an extension of your living space, and making it work for you and your family is important to make sure you’re getting the most out of all your living space. If your space doesn’t work for you, then it’s not likely going to be a place you want to spend a whole lot of time. So, instead of thinking about it as outside vs. inside, think about it as another living room or another dining room: what do you want to see there, and what would make you want to spend time there? Once you’ve done that, here’s what you need to help get you there.

What’s your purpose?

How do you use this space currently, and how do you intend to use it? Do you want to make it a dining area or a lounge area – or maybe both? The first thing you need to do is determine how you intend to use the space you have. How you plan to use the area will determine what you need to make that happen. During this part, you also need to consider if you need a kid-friendly space to go and play while the adults enjoy a drink. Identify all the areas you will need to accommodate, ideally.

Backyard layout

Just like you would think about the layout of your home and how rooms will flow into each other, you will want to do the same with your outdoor living area. Items like keeping the dining area close to where you’re BBQing or preparing drinks might seem unimportant right now, but when you’re hosting parties or even just making dinner for your family, those small details will make a big difference.

Make the most of your landscape.

Not all outdoor areas are going to have magazine-worthy views – but that’s ok – enjoying the view your backyard or balcony does have to offer is still just as great. Is there a spot where you know is perfect for enjoying a morning cup of coffee? You might want to set up a small table and chairs, or even a lounge chair, so you can sit there in the morning and enjoy it. Maybe there is a big tree in your yard you think is perfect for sitting under and reading, so you want to put a comfortable chair there. Think about the surroundings you have in the yard of your Burlington home and how you enjoy the space.

Outdoor furniture and lighting

As mentioned, you will want to make sure you determine how you want to use this space and make sure it is functional in that way for you. For example, if you’re planning to use the space primarily for dining, then you will want to make sure you have the right furniture for eating outside. Likewise, if you are going to use it more for casual entertaining, then you’ll want to make sure you have the right space to lounge around, and that people will be comfortable.

No matter how you want to use your outdoor space, it’s important that it’s functional for your family and how you’re going to use it. If you know that you hate to eat outside but really love having coffee outside in the morning or a drink after work on the deck, you need to plan the space accordingly. Make sure you’re going to enjoy the space if you’re going to invest in redecorating or renovating it.
